Problem Summary
Airlines struggle with:
- Lack of real-time visibility on baggage movement
- High rate of mishandled or lost baggage
- Manual processes with minimal digital tracking
- Operational inefficiencies due to missing tracking data
- Pressure to comply with international standards like IATA 753
The airline client needed a scalable digital system to track every bag from passenger check-in to final delivery, across multiple airports and handling agents.
Our Solution: End-to-End Baggage Tracking System
We developed a fully digital, event-based tracking platform covering the entire baggage lifecycle. The system was built around the four mandatory IATA 753 tracking points and extended to support additional operational events.
IATA 753 Mandatory Tracking Events Included:
- Passenger Check-in (Tagging Event)
- Bag is associated with the passenger.
- Barcode, digital tag, or RFID scanned and stored.
- Aircraft Loading (Inbound Transfer)
- Each bag is scanned before being loaded onto the aircraft.
- Prevents loading errors and ensures flight compatibility.
- Aircraft Unloading (Arrival Transfer)
- Bags are tracked as soon as they are offloaded.
- Useful for monitoring tight connections and transit accuracy.
- Final Delivery to Passenger
- Last-mile confirmation that the bag reached the carousel or claim area.
Additional Tracking Events We Implemented
To go beyond compliance and offer more operational intelligence, we included:
- Security screening stage
- Customs & inspection points
- Interline transfer tracking (bag moving across different airlines)
- Loading bay arrival tracking
- Exception handling: delayed bags, rush bags, irregular operations
These additional events give the airline more visibility, improve data analytics, and help reduce mishandling.
System Architecture Overview
Our baggage tracking solution includes:
- Mobile Scanning App:
Baggage handlers can scan barcodes or RFID during all operations using handheld devices or phones. - Centralized Tracking Backend (API-driven):
Built with modern scalable technologies to handle thousands of events per hour. - Real-Time Dashboard:
Airline operations teams can view bag statuses live across airports and agents. - Alerts & Notifications:
Flags bags that are missing, misrouted, or left behind. - Audit Trail / Compliance Reporting:
Provides standardized reports required for IATA audits.
How It Works — Step-by-Step Scenario
1. Passenger Check-In
At check-in, the system registers the bag with a unique tracking ID linked to the passenger’s itinerary.
Event Recorded: Check-in scanned, timestamp, agent ID.
2. Security & Handling
Bags pass through security screening and handling points — each scan updates the system.
Event Recorded: Screening passed / rejected, routing code, facility.
3. Aircraft Loading
Bags are scanned before entering the aircraft.
If a bag doesn’t match the flight: The system alerts the handler in real time.
4. Arrival & Aircraft Unloading
Upon landing, bags are scanned again when unloaded.
Event Recorded: Arrival scan, connection info, handling agent.
5. Delivery to Passenger
The last scan indicates the bag is placed on the correct carousel.
Passengers can be notified through SMS or mobile app integration.
Impact & Benefits
Our system delivered clear improvements:
For the Airline
- Full compliance with IATA Resolution 753
